INTERLINING & FUSING Questions

Find answers to common questions about interlinings, garment applications, fusing, sustainability, sourcing, and troubleshooting.

Questions & Answers

  • Interlinings provide shape, stability, and support to garments. They are commonly used in collars, cuffs, plackets, waistbands, and lapels.

Our tip: Choose an interlining that matches both the fabric and the garment's intended function.

  • The right interlining depends on fabric weight, fabric construction, garment design, desired appearance, care requirements, and performance expectations.

Our tip: Consult our Wendler interlining specialists early in product development for the best results.

  • Interlining helps garments maintain their shape, improves durability, enhances appearance, and contributes to overall wearer comfort. The right interlining supports consistent quality throughout the garment's lifecycle.

Our tip: Interlining is a key factor in achieving a quality product.

  • Fusible interlining is bonded to the fabric using adhesive, while non-fusible interlining is sewn into the garment. The best option depends on the garment design, fabric type, and performance requirements.

Our tip: Always do test runs and validate fusing parameters before bulk production.

    • Woven interlinings provide stability and a structured appearance.
    • Nonwoven interlinings offer versatility and efficient processing.
    • Knitted interlinings deliver stretch, flexibility, and comfort.

The best choice depends on the fabric, garment type, and desired performance.

  • Wendler's IL and PC Lines are developed for demanding workwear and industrial uniform applications that require durability, heat resistance, and resistance to industrial laundering. Our D Line is specifically designed for defense, military, and protective wear applications, including cut- and stab-resistant interlinings featuring glass fiber technology.

  • The ideal shirt interlining depends on the style, fabric, collar construction, desired appearance, and processing requirements. Popular options include cotton-based interlinings lines such as DV, 3000, 3600, DUETT, 7000, and HF Lines.

Our tip: Collar, collar band, and cuff interlinings should be selected as a balanced system.

  • Yes. Follow these key rules for optimal collar performance:

    • Collar skin should not be lighter than the collar patch.
    • Collar band must support the top collar.
    • Business shirts typically use a collar patch.
    • Cuff interlining can often match the collar skin.
    • Collar skin, collar patch, and cuffs are usually cut in warp direction.
    • Collar bands can be cut in warp or bias direction.
    • Formal shirts may use heavier interlinings cut on the bias.

Our tip: Use the same interlining for the collar skin and collar band for balanced results.

  • Successful fusing depends on the right combination of temperature, pressure, and time.

Our tip: The best results come from balancing these parameters, not simply increasing them.

  • Yes. Wendler's technical specialists support customers with:

    • Interlining selection
    • Fusing parameter optimization
    • Bonding analysis
    • Wash testing
    • Shrinkage evaluation
    • Production troubleshooting
  • Testing helps verify bond performance, optimize machine settings, and reduce production risks, as every fabric and interlining combination behaves differently.

  • Steam is generally not recommended during fusing, as it can negatively affect adhesive bonding performance.

  • Fused parts should generally be placed across the conveyor belt and can be positioned diagonally when required.

Our tip: Use an offset position and the full belt width to achieve more consistent fusing results.

  • Interlining strike-through can occur when fusing parameters such as temperature, pressure, or time are not correctly adjusted. It may also occur with very lightweight, transparent, or open-weave fabrics, where the adhesive becomes visible on the fabric surface.

  • Delamination after washing can result from incorrect fusing conditions, processing variations, unsuitable fabric-interlining combinations, or washing conditions that exceed the product's performance requirements.

Our tip: Always test the complete fabric and interlining combination before bulk production to ensure lasting, reliable bonding.

  • Interlining strike-back occurs when adhesive migrates back into the interlining during fusing, often due to excessive temperature, pressure, or fusing time, particularly in the first heating zone.

    Other possible causes include:

    • Excessive fusing pressure
    • Adhesive sinking back into the interlining construction
    • Difficult-to-fuse fabrics
    • A contaminated or dirty conveyor belt

  • A shiny fabric surface can occur when adhesive coating dots become visible through lightweight, transparent, or open-weave fabrics. In many cases, the cause is overfusing, where excessive temperature, pressure, or fusing time affects the fabric surface.

Our tip: For sensitive shirt fabrics, use tissue paper or a Teflon film during fusing to help protect the fabric surface and reduce shine marks.

  • Yellowing can occur when the fabric is exposed to excessive heat or an excessively long fusing time.

Our tip: Always carry out fusing tests before bulk production and adjust the parameters as needed to prevent color changes and achieve consistent results.

  • The interlining may detach or form bubbles after washing if the bond between the fabric and the interlining was insufficient or was not maintained during washing.

    Common causes include:

    • incorrect fusing parameters
    • insufficient cooling time
    • contamination between the layers
    • damage to the adhesive coating
    • insufficient bond strength
    • selection of an unsuitable interlining

Our tip: Allow the fused parts to cool completely before handling or further processing. Always test the fabric-interlining combination before bulk production to ensure reliable performance after washing.

  • The moiré effect can occur when the structure of the fabric interacts with the structure of the interlining, creating a wavy pattern or interference effect on the fabric surface.

Our tip: To prevent the moiré effect -  1. Cut the interlining at a slight angle rather than in the warp direction, 2. Choose an interlining with a different structure.

  • A collar can lose its shape when the interlining in the collar stand is too lightweight and does not provide sufficient stability to support the collar together with the base interlining and any additional reinforcement.

Our tip: Contact us. We can help you identify the right combination of interlinings to achieve a stable, well-supported collar that reliably maintains its shape.

  • All Wendler interlinings in black and charcoal colour have a modified coating (MC coating). This prevents strike-through.

Our tip: You can also prevent strike-through by using coloured coating dots (CP finishing). This is particularly good for very transparent fabrics. The coloured coating dots are not visible on the fabric surface.

  • Adhesive residues are usually caused by:

    • contamination of the conveyor belt
    • adhesive build-up
    • incorrect fabric cutting

Our tip: Regular cleaning of the fusing machine and preventive maintenance help prevent contamination and adhesive residues.

  • Our Interlinings are certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I or/and Class II requirements.

  • Yes. Selected Wendler interlining solutions are available with certified sustainable materials and traceable sourcing options.

    Available certifications include:

    • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
      OCS (Organic Content Standard)
      BCI (Better Cotton Initiative)
